Father’s Day is fast approaching and that means it’s time to start brainstorming new and exciting ideas to honor the special dads out there. Dads love to grill, but since it’s his day, why not let him hang up the tongs and relax? Instead, pull the kiddos together and start creating a day of backyard fun, complete with customized lawn games and a picnic. Read on for a few tips to get started…
· Grub. In my opinion, food is the linchpin of any party, and a backyard Father’s Day is no exception. Make all of dad’s favorites, or pick up some delicious takeout from a local restaurant as a special treat. Don’t forget to grab some fun paper plates, cups and plastic silverware and carry it all out to the backyard. All that’s left is to spread out a picnic blanket and enjoy!
· Games. Your picnic isn’t complete without games and we’ve got a perfect one! Using banner material, have a giant backyard matching game printed at your local FedEx Office®. You can even upload your design and print your game board online.
I created a template for a 4 foot by 4 foot game board divided into 16 squares to make 8 matches per game. I chose to fill my game board with pictures of my godsons’ family members, but you can use any pictures or words you’d like.
Since the squares are big, I used colorful flower pots to cover the images, but you could also use large bean bags or even Frisbees.
If you have older kids, the same idea can be used to create an outdoor chess or checkers set for your very own family tournament. The possibilities are endless and since the material is durable, the game board can be used well after Father’s Day is over!
· Gratitude. Help the kids show dad how much he means to them with some special homemade touches. From handmade cards to a poster collage with pictures and memories from the year, dad will love the hard work that went into creating these mini masterpieces in his honor.
