Keeping Cool in the Neighborhood on the Fourth
This is Part One in a three-part series on celebrating the upcoming Fourth of July holiday in style!
The Fourth of July is coming up, which means cookouts and picnics and neighborhood get together. I am in Texas which also means the temperature will be somewhere between 100 and one million degrees outside, depending on the heat index. It is entirely possible I will become stuck walking through melted asphalt at some point during the day.
There are some tips you can keep in mind to survive your annual outdoor celebrations. First a little food safety. For cold dishes like potato salad, keep them in an ice filled chest until you are ready to serve. When you are ready to serve, put the food in a small metal bowl that is then placed in a larger bowl filled with ice. As you need to refill the cold dishes, don’t add fresh product to what had been sitting out. Either dump what’s left or wait for the food you already put out to be eaten. These couple of simple tips can help minimize food borne bugs that seem to happen a lot with outdoor events in summertime heat.
Next, here is a little craft project to help keep your guests cool. My fellow blogger wrote a post just before Memorial Day with a way to make super simple fans that are totally customizable and rather inexpensive. (You can check out her original post here.) For the 4th of July, add a festive touch by finding some cool patriotic images from the internet that you can print on to cardstock. Just make sure the site you pull them from that it is ok to print them and you are not violating any copyright. I found these on PublicDomainPictures.net. I cut the prints down to 8” by 5” to make a better sized fan, and glued one print on either side of the stick. Boom! You have a simple custom fan you can hand out to your guests to help them keep cool during the party.
Do you have any other ideas for making a great summer party? Leave a comment and let us know. And this 4th, stay cool!
